Each year, U.N. Headquarters in New York observes the International Day of Families with a special program on May 15. The 2019 theme is “Families and Climate Action” with a focus on U.N. sustainable development goal 13 (SDG13).

The major targets of SDG13 for this year's observance are to:

  • Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning; and
  • Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.

A panel discussion will highlight:

  • Inter-generational approach to sustainability
  • Sustainable development education & practice
  • Sustainable family farming from indigenous perspective
  • ‘Greening the blue’ and other good practices at the United Nations and beyond

The observance is organized by the Division for Inclusive Social Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Global Communications Civil Society.

The event is open to the public and targets civil society, Permanent Missions, academics and practitioners. Special passes will be secured for those without a valid UN ID by the UN Global Communications Civil Society. Click here to register. 

 

Families—both traditional and non-traditional—are the foundation of society. Some of the most formative years of our lives are spent growing up with our families, so they should be celebrated! And today we do just that. Founded by the United Nations in 1994, The International Day of Families is observed on May 15 every year to celebrate the importance of families, people, societies and cultures around the world. It’s been around since 1994, with a different family-focused theme each year (past themes have included “Building Families Based on Partnership” and “Families, education and well-being”). So celebrate with us this year, and learn about some of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families around the world!
